As you know, this month we have been celebrating Black History Month. We’ve watched videos about the lives of famous people like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. Books about famous African Americans and Civil Rights leaders have been on display all month for you to read. Many of you have borrowed these books more than once!
I wanted to draw your attention to a special book that I just received. Before She Was Harriet written by Lesa Cline-Ransome and illustrated by James E. Ransome, is the story of Harriet Tubman’s life. She was the leader of the Underground Railroad who led hundreds of slaves to freedom in the North.
Her story is told wonderfully using verse, which means as poetry. It has beautiful watercolor illustrations. In addition, it is also an award-winning book, winning a whole list of awards! It is a Junior Library Guild Selection, a Christopher Award Winner, and a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Book to name just a few of the awards it has won. I always tell you to look for the award winners, Before She Was Harriet has won five!
Bring this book home with you, it is a MUST read!
