In April we celebrate Diversity Month which started in 2004. Keeping that in mind, let's talk about great Multicultural Books, some of which are found in our library media center. According to Short, Lynch-Brown, & Tomlinson (2018) "multicultural and international children's literature builds bridges of understanding across countries and cultures(p. 174)." In other words, it helps us understand each other and where we come from. What better way to celebrate our diversity than through reading a great book and learning about a new culture or maybe even learning more about our own. Listed below are several books taken from a booklist from Essentials of Children's Literature (Short et. al. 2018, p. 172):
Families Around the World by Margaret Rui'rs (global)
I Love Saturdays y dominos by Alma Flor Ada (Mexican American, biracial)
My Mei Mei by Ed Young (Chinese American, adoption)
Where's Jamela? by Niki Daly (South African)
My Two Grannies by Flotilla Benjamin (British, biracial)
My Family Tree and Me by Dusan Petricic (Serbia)
We do not have these books added to our shelves yet, so maybe you can make a special visit to our public library to borrow these wonderful stories!
Books found in our library media center include: Grandfather's Journey by Allen Say, Far Away Home by Jane Kurtz, and The Journey and Me and My Fear by Francesca Sanna. Look for our Multicultural books displayed around the library! Enjoy!
